When did God give the original promise? The promise was given to Abraham in Genesis 17:16 when God spoke unto him and said that she would conceive them a son.
Abraham was 99yrs old and Sarah was 90yrs old to me God is letting them know that when God makes a vow no matter how old you are when he makes the vow he keeps his covanant with his word.

I believe the God spoke to Abram about the original promise in Gen 12:7- The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
As time progressed on God spoke more in detail to Abraham about what that promise really meant. Gen 15:4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” & Finally Gen 17:19-Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac.

God gave the original promise to Abraham when he is was 99 years old. Genesis 12:7 that states(AMP version) Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, I will give this land to your descendants. So abram built an altar there to honor the Lord who had appeared to him.

When Abram was 99 years old and Sarai was 90 (in Chap.17), at the same time He He also changed their names to Abraham and Sarah and established His covenant with Abraham.

Above I stated that Abraham was 99 years old when he received the first promise of Isaac; however, after further studying, it appears that Abraham was first given the promise back in Chapter 15 while Abraham was yet childless when God gave Abraham a vision telling him that his heir would come from his own body. Therefore, I recant my first answer and say that the promise (the promise of an heir) took place when Abraham was 85 or 86 years old, since in the next chapter, chapter 16 he was 86 years old when Ishmael was born. We know that Ishmael was not the promised child. God confirmed that promise again when Abraham was 99years old when the Lord appeared to him in chapter 17, made a covenant with him, changed his name and promised him and Sarah a son.
